Statement on the Sighting of the Crescent Moon for the Month of Shawwal 1446 A.H.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
It is He who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light, and ordained its phases that you might know the number of years and the calculation [of time] .” — Yunus: 5

According to scientific calculations conducted by the Center for Astronomical Studies and Research, the crescent moon of Shawwal is expected to be visible to the naked eye in many regions of the world — including Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and a wide area of the Americasat sunset on Sunday, the 29th of the holy month of Ramadan 1446 A.H., corresponding to March 30, 2025.

Detailed astronomical data for 70 cities, ranging from Suva (Fiji) in the east to Whitehorse (Canada) in the west, reveal the following:

  1. The conditions for the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon in most parts of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and much of the Americas are favorable, provided that weather conditions are suitable.

  2. Crescent sighting will be difficult in Southeast Asia, northern Australia, southern Africa, and parts of southern South America.

  3. In southern Australia and the far southern regions of South America, crescent visibility will be very difficult or not possible at all.

We, at the Center, will collect and analyze observational reports and submit them to the relevant religious authorities, as the determination of the beginning of lunar months is not based solely on astronomical calculations, but rather on the verified religious sighting of the crescent moon.

We ask Allah, the Almighty, to bring in this new month upon all believers across the globe with safety, peace, security, and Islam. Indeed, He is All-Hearing and Responsive.
