127 light years away, there is a solar system much like our own. The solar system has at least 5 planets that are orbiting around a star, which scientists call HD 10180. The new extrasolar system was discovered by a team at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.
According to what's mentioned in the section of news of The Astronomical Research Center (A.R.C) from the Guardian, the five planets are similar to Neptune, but are all closer than Mars is to our sun. The scientist also say that there is evidence of two more planets, giving the new solar system a total of 7 planets.
Indyposted reports that the 7 planets all have an orbital pattern, making this new system very similar to our own.
"We have found what is most likely the system with the most planets yet discovered," said Christophe Lovis of the University of Geneva in Switzerland. "This remarkable discovery also highlights the fact that we are now entering a new era in exoplanet research: the study of complex planetary systems and not just of individual planets. Studies of planetary motions in the new system reveal complex gravitational interactions between the planets and give us insights into the long-term evolution of the system."
The five planets are 13 to 25 times larger than the earth, and orbit HD 1080 in 6 to 600 days.
This isn't the only extrasolar system out there. According to the Guardian, there have been 15 extrasolar systems discovered so far.
